Newcastle High School junior Caleb Hysell was among students chosen to have their poetry published.
Hysell, a student of NHS English teacher Andrea Thomas, entered his poem “White Thorns” in the Oklahoma Council Teachers of English writing contest. Hysell was one of only 18 entries chosen from more than 500 total entries in the poetry section.
“So he did very well,” Thomas said.
Students chosen for publication were recognized at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Enid. Thomas, who is also sponsor of the NHS Creative Writing Club, said they were also given the chance to share their poems with the audience, which Caleb did.
Caleb is the son of Josh Hysell, and Angela and Valerie Hysell.
