Newcastle’s new animal shelter will have its grand opening at 4:30 p.m. Monday in a celebration with a ribbon cutting by the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce. The public is invited to the new facility at 721 N. Walker Drive.

In attendance will be city officials including the mayor and City Council, as well as representatives from the facility’s designer, Guernsey, and the building contractor, Nabholz Construction.

City spokesman Scott Hannan said this will be a time the public will be able to tour the facility, and enjoy the ribbon cutting.

Hannan said the new shelter is much bigger than the old one, at 4,400 square feet. It is all enclosed. He said there is a separate quarantine area so the potentially sick animals can be kept away from the other dogs. There’s also a reception area for adoptees to get to know their new animals, and a dedicated area for the volunteers who serve the facility.

Hannan said this is a modern and smart-looking facility that will be able to grow with the community, and help to make Newcastle the best Newcastle it can be.
