Newcastle Wrestling was host to Chandler on Monday for senior night, the last opportunity for the graduating athletes to wrestle on their home mats.

Newcastle wrestling coaches said they wanted to thank the senior wrestlers and managers for their contributions to the program.

Students active in the program include: Hayden Archey, Dorothy Bledsoe, Olivia Cochran, Ezekiel Duran, Aundrea Estrada, Brynna Ford, Jacob Jones, Jaxon Lamb, Shane Lovejoy, Kaitlyn Steinhour, Ryan Trozzi, and Payton Wolfe.

Regionals week is coming up for Newcastle and the Racers will be using this week to prepare and plan for their time to shine.

Girls Regionals were originally slated to be a one-day event, but due to the entries in Newcastle’s classification, it has been changed to a two-day event.

“Our girls will be heading to Yukon on Monday, February 12 and Tuesday, February 13. Wrestling will start at 5 p.m. on Monday, and 10 a.m. on Tuesday,” coaches stated.

The boys will be driving to Duncan for Regionals. Coaches said this is a lot closer than the past couple of years. Wrestling starts at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 16 and on Saturday, February 17.

This past week was a good change of pace for the Racers, coaches stated. The Racers did not have any duals and the only tournaments were the Junior High All-State Tournaments for boys and girls.

The girls’ tournament was on Thursday, and even though they did not bring home any medals the girls got some much-needed experience and a few wins along the way. Most of the girls tournaments this year had small brackets, so they would only wrestle two to three times, coaches stated, but the All-State brackets get very large, they said.

Zoey Bornt went 1-2 in a bracket containing 35 girls. Tapanga Bomt’s bracket was larger with 47 and she won 3 of her 5 matches. Katie Julian said she did better than last year, going 2-2 in a bracket with 27 other girls.

Boys took the mat on Friday and Saturday, with some of the brackets reaching the 100’s.

Gage Stark and Eason Beaty went the furthest reaching the consolation quarterfinals by winning 5 of their 7 matches. Jackson Brooks went 2-2, as did Jake Robertson. Hunter Platte wrestled well but came up short.
