Those wishing to spread the love associated with Valentine’s Day have a limited window of opportunity to create a card and submit it to either the City of Newcastle, 120 N.E. 2nd Street, or the Newcastle Public Library, 705 N.W. 10th Street.
Cards are being sought by Newcastle Parks & Recreation in coordination with the Library, Newcastle Public Schools, and OU Health’s Oklahoma Children’s Hospital.
The cards, which will be delivered to children who are hospitalized at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital, should have uplifting messages that focus on the child as a whole rather than on their illness.
The cards can be designed and written with crayons or markers, but some may want to include special markers, charter stickers, glue-on craft decals, or stamps or other types of decals.
The only rule is that nothing can be excessive to the point where it could fall off. This is especially true for glitter, according to the organizers.
They suggest writing things such as “stay strong,” “you are amazing,” “you are awesome,” or “hope you have a great day today,” and include Happy Valentine’s Day. They said make sure not to include any personal information such as social media accounts, emails, or phone numbers. Also, they ask that you do not write religious comments such as “God bless,” or “I’m praying for you.”
The reason is that Oklahoma Children’s Hospital cannot distribute cards with these comments since they treat patients of all religions, as well as patients who do not practice religion.
Finally, card creators are asked to sign their names to the cards, and you can include a school or organization of which you belong.
When complete, cards can be dropped off or mailed to either Newcastle City Hall or the library in Newcastle.
