Maker steps down from school board, Elcyzyn named interim president

Board accepting applications for empty seat through Feb. 6

When the Newcastle Board of Education met Tuesday, January 9, they did so with a couple of changes in personnel.

School board president John Maker had announced at the December 12 meeting that he was moving from the school district and would no longer be able to serve in Seat 5. Board member Tiffany Elcyzyn was approved to serve as interim board president.

Maker’s move leaves the Seat 5 board position vacant. At the meeting, the board approved the seeking of applicants for the position. Applicants must reside in the Seat 5 area of Newcastle. A map is on page 2 of this week’s issue of the Newcastle Pacer.

The school has a form which can be filled out by those interested, and must be received back by close of business on Tuesday, February 6. Forms can be downloaded at https://www.newcastle. k12.ok.us/DistrictInformation.aspx.

The application for the vacant board position provides information necessary to determine a candidate’s service to the school district. It includes requirements for service, a pledge to complete ongoing instruction about education issues and board service, and a statement showing the applicant has not been convicted of a misdemeanor involving embezzlement, or a felony under the laws of the State of Oklahoma.

Elcyzyn said tentative board plans are to schedule a special meeting between February 6-10 to interview candidates, and then possibly vote on a candidate at the regular February 11 board meeting.
