Teagun Painter and Melora Serrano, both students in Mrs. Thomas’s AP English class at Newcastle High School, won awards in this year’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy essay competition. Painter won first for the local post and second at the district level, taking home $175 for her efforts. Serrano won second in the local post and a $75 prize. They will be recognized by the VFW at an awards ceremony in January.
