A win and a loss was added to the 2023 books for the Newcastle Racers as they look to competition in 2024. The Racers beat Comanche, 47-39 on December 19, and then took the loss to Classen School of Advanced Studies, 51-49, on December 22.
The Racers traded off quarters with the Indians, going ahead in the first, 13-5, but then Comanche came back in the second scoring 14 points to Newcastle’s four. The Racers showed their dominance in the third and fourth quarters, scoring 10 and 20 to the Indians’ 4 and 13.
Zach Cragg led Newcastle scoring with 14 points. Bobby Burrell had 10 points, Antonio Brown had seven, and Rex Heskew added 2. Comanche’s team of only eight players was led by Dillon Ellis with 13 points.
The game against Classen SAS came down to the wire with Newcastle attempting to make a late comeback, scoring 14, 8, 8 and then 18 in the final period, to Classen’s 13,13, 11 and 12.
Burrell had 22 points for Newcastle. Jon’Tre Sloan and Brown each had 8 points, while Alec Shumard put in 5, and Heskew, Chris Brinlee, and Alan Price added 2 each.
The Racers return to basketball action January 2, 2024, at Tuttle, and then they’ll play in the Noble Tournament January 4-6, 2024.
