Racers lose to Blanchard, Anadarko; preparing for PC West tourney

It was a tough week for Newcastle boys basketball as the Racers lost to both Blanchard and Anadarko. The Blanchard loss, on December 12, was only by one point.

Against Blanchard, the Racers came out hot to lead first quarter scoring, 16-7, but then in the second quarter Blanchard turned things around to almost even the score. Both teams fought during the third and fourth quarters, but Blanchard ended up on the top, 55-54.

Newcastle sophomore Alan Price led Racer scoring with 17 points — making five three-pointers. Antonio Brown had 13 points, Zach Cragg and Bobby Burrell each had eight, Chris Brinlee had seven, and Jon’Tre Sloan added three.

Sharing as leading scorers for Blanchard was Carson Cooksey and Ross Johnston, with 14 each.

Against Anadarko, the Racers lost 67-58. The Warriors spread their scoring around between players for their victory.

Newcastle came out hot, scoring 19 points while holding Anadarko to only 5. Anadarko showed up in the second quarter, however, pitching in 29 points to Newcastle’s 11. The third quarter proved a battle with Anadarko scoring only 12 to Newcastle’s 14, but Anadarko again hit their buckets with a 21-14 fourth quarter showing.

Bobby Burrell led Newcastle scoring with 26 points. Antonio Brown and Zach Cragg had eight each, while Alan Price had three. Chris Brinlee had two, and Rex Heskew added a free throw.

The Racers played Comanche on Tuesday. They’ll play next in the Sick of Sickle Cell Showcase tournament at Putnam City West starting on Friday.
