Mid-America Technology Center was busy Thursday morning as 116 students and 6 advisors boarded busses bound for the SkillsUSA 2023 Southwest District Leadership Conference held at the Grady Couty Fairground in Chickasha.

This is a conference for students by students.

The Southwest District Officer Team, which includes five MATC students: Isaiah Butler, Homeschooled/Norman; Gabe Herring, Epic/ Wynnewood; Myles Hall, Little Axe; McKenna Largent, Lindsay; and Dale Hodge, Newcastle, organized the entire conference from planning to execution. These students led all the activities, kept the students engaged, gave speeches, and made all announcements.

Mid-America Tech also had two state SkillsUSA officers attend, lending moral support and speaking about SkillsUSA on the state level.

The students attending the conference had the opportunity to learn about the SkillsUSA Framework, which emphasizes personal, workplace, and technical skills that will enable them to achieve career success. Then the students attended more in-depth presentations on each of the Framework components: Personal Skills, Workplace Skills, and Technical Skills Grounded in Academics. In addition, students worked on their Statesman Award, and there was also time to have fun with lunch, games, and networking.

SkillsUSA is a national organization championing the skilled trades, representing nearly 400,000 career and technical students and teachers. Its mission is to empower students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders, and responsible community members.
