Residents don’t have rate increase on polycarts yet

If you were confused a couple of weeks ago after reading our story on the cost of polycarts increasing in Newcastle, it’s understandable.

If you were confused a couple of weeks ago after reading our story on the cost of polycarts increasing in Newcastle, it’s understandable.

We said the rates being charged to the City of Newcastle by Republic Services for this service has been increased and the increase had been passed along to residents as of October 1; however, these rates have not been passed through to residents (please see “Correction” on page 4 of this week’s issue of the Pacer).

City Manager Kevin Self said City staff is currently studying the rates the City is charging to residents to ensure the City’s costs are being covered. If not, the increases from Republic Services might then be passed on to anyone who has a polycart.

Self said any change in rates would be taken before the City Council. The City currently charges residents $13.50/month per polycart. The City’s new rate from Republic Services is $11.67 each.
